Collective Memory

2019 | Oil on linen | 200 x 100

This piece was presented at PAN Amsterdam 2024

Collective Memory is about how we unconsciously carry experiences, as fragments that stay with us. The woman in this painting is caught in a quiet moment. She’s not focused on the world around her, but turned inward. That sense of reflection was the starting point for this piece.

Some memories bring comfort, others are more complex, but together they shape us. I don’t try to plan every detail in advance, I work intuitively and let the painting evolve until something resonates. I’m less interested in showing a specific emotion and more in leaving space for the viewer’s own response.

The muted colors and soft light give the painting a calm feel, but there is something going on just beneath the surface. That tension between stillness and movement is something I like to explore.

The painting is made with high-quality oil paint on fine linen. The walnut wood frame was custom made. It’s signed on the back and ready to hang.
